Live Again:
Acceptance is a separating, a loosening, a letting go. It is peeling layers of sand and dirt, and sketching out the unknown sparkling spaces of infinite depth and infinitesimal growth.
Using watercolor paintings, drawing, and ceramic sculptures the works depict the body in metamorphic and sometimes magical states of growth and decay. This body of work was created as a reflection on how one psychologically processes death and illness. The watercolor paintings reference historical medical illustrations and often show isolated body parts in various states of physical decay, displaying imagined illnesses, or magical growths. They are influenced by superstition and fears relating to illness and death. The sculptures function as artifacts of uncovered appendages, in a strange place, and seem to exist between states of life and death. When making them I imagine crystals growing on a skull in a dark cave, and new magical lives growing on the deceased. I imagine prosthetics coming to life and the body evaporating in space. The result leaves our bodies and psychology presented as unknowable, yet inescapable, forces in our lives.
