This is one of the first paintings where I used the imagery of animals as a way to express a conception of evil, strength and power. The painting is of the head of a Nyala which is a Southern African Antelope. I am attracted to the Nyala's distinctive features such as its long twisted horns, small diamond eyes and well defined black and white patterns that make it resemble the goats used in a medieval depiction of the Devil. Reminiscent of hanging a taxidermy head on the wall I painted the Nyala upside down as a way of taking away the strength of the animal and the symbols that it may represent.
